Julie Schimel, Psy.D.

Julie Schimel is a New York State Licensed Psychologist and Certified School Psychologist. Dr. Schimel specializes in providing therapy involving evidence-based, individualized strategies to adults, adolescents and children. Her area of practice also includes parent support and training, including new parents and parents of children with special needs.

When conducting treatment, Dr. Schimel uses a highly individualized approach that integrates components of CBT, DBT, and mindfulness. Dr. Schimel is committed to providing a supportive, non-judgmental, authentic, and collaborative environment for the individuals and families with whom she works. Her warm, engaging interpersonal style allows her to quickly establish rapport with adults and young children alike. Dr. Schimel’s treatment approach is evidence-based, while also being uniquely customized to each individual’s strengths and challenges. Dr. Schimel believes in meeting her clients where they are at, and in creating an environment of mutual respect and trust.

Dr. Schimel has over a decade of experience working with both adults and adolescents facing a variety of challenges including anxiety, depression and mood dysregulation, bereavement and loss, social and relationship difficulties, life transitions, and stress. She has worked extensively with college students in navigating the various changes and pressures they face. In addition, Dr. Schimel has extensive experience working with preschool and school-aged children and their parents, with a focus on challenging behaviors, inattention and impulsivity, Autism Spectrum Disorders, mood dysregulation, anxiety, adjustment difficulties, and peer relational challenges. In her years of practice, Dr. Schimel has collaborated with both parents and educators to develop effective interventions across home and school settings. Dr. Schimel understands how difficult parenting can be, and the fear of criticism and judgment many parents face. She has worked with countless parents from the postpartum phase and beyond, to provide support and tools on this journey.

Prior to the New View Psychology Group, Dr. Schimel was a member of a private practice where she provided individual therapy to adults, adolescents, and children. She has also practiced as a School Psychologist and Behavioral Specialist on Long Island. Dr.Schimel earned her M.S. and Psy.D. in School Psychology, with a specialty concentration in therapy, from St. John’s University. Dr. Schimel’s doctoral dissertation focused on test anxiety in the college population. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in Psychology from New York University.

Dr. Schimel offers flexible daytime hours in both the Plainview office and through telehealth.
